Drug Tips for Cold
Weather The colder weather has
arrived to north Texas. In the name of convenience many
of us store pharmaceuticals in the barn tack room or in
our horse trailers, but the drop in temperature can have
an effect on the medications stored outside.
Many medications, if given after they freeze, won’t harm
a horse, but their efficacy may be affected. As an
example, if Acepromazine freezes it will not have the
same tranqualizing effects if administered to a horse
after it has thawed. Not sure if a medication has
frozen? Watch for changes in its color or consistency.
If you notice these changes throw it out.
Vaccines, however, are a different story and should not
be administered after they have frozen. They can cause
adverse injection site reactions. If you are unsure of
the effect of cold weather on a particular drug give us
a call at the clinic.
Preventing a freeze is the most reliable method to
ensuring those “go-to” drugs work when we need them. We
recommend storing those staple medications in a portable
container that can be moved indoors on those cold winter
nights. So after you finish draining your water hoses
grab your drug box on the way to the house.

Performance Horse
Electrolyte and Mineral Mix
formulated by Reata Equine Hospital The veterinarians at Reata
Equine Hospital know the importance of maintaining
proper electrolyte and mineral balance in horses. All
too often we see the negative effects of electrolyte
deficiencies and the performance limiting dehydration
that accompanies them. Electrolyte imbalances and
decreased water intake are associated with colic,
anhydrosis, tying up and many other diseases that can be
not only performance limiting, but life threatening.
In an effort to provide an effective and affordable
product to horse owners Reata Equine Hospital is now
making available our custom formulation of electrolytes
and minerals. Sodium, potassium and chloride serve as
the base of the blend with calcium and phosphorus added
in proportion to the specific needs of horses. Trace
minerals are then combined with this mixture to provide
a unique formulation equine professionals rely on to
ensure the health and performance of their horses.
Performance Horse Electrolyte and Mineral Supplement
formulated by Reata Equine Hospital helps replace
electrolytes and minerals lost in sweat and stimulates
increased water consumption. One 25 gm scoop per feeding
safely provides what your horse needs at less than .05¢
a day.
